letterpress by Jenn Nassef

Typography is an area of design I am considerably passionate about. I was very eager to learn the art of the letterpress on this trip to London. After we gained a basic knowledge of how the letterpress works, we broke off into groups in order to produce a collaboration of 20 two-color posters that expressed "London 2010" in an aesthetically designed manner.
An adorable couple, Alex and Rose, shared their skills and knowledge of the presses throughout the three days we spent in the studio. The process was absolutely incredible, not to mention the drawers and drawers of typefaces and endless sizes of furniture. Alex and Rose definitely made our lives easier as we struggled to perfectly set the individual letters in preparation to print.

I had a general idea of what to expect before stepping into the studio, but after experiencing the process and how much work is put into each of the pieces produced, I can only imagine how difficult it was to rely solely upon this process to print. The advancement of technology has brought us a long way, providing simpler means of printing, but I am extremely grateful to have this opportunity to gain the knowledge of what some believe may someday become a lost art form.
