Letterpress by Leila Amer

The letterpress workshop was such an incredible experience. After we received a basic introduction we split into groups and our goal was to create a series of about 20 posters that contained the phrase ‘London 2010.’ The two people running the workshop, married couple Alex and Rose, were super helpful and made it very easy for us to get into the swing of things.

Digging through countless drawers filled with everything from Gill Sans to Goudy in search of particular letters was often times a daunting task. However, the time it took to set the text by hand gave you an appreciation for how much technology has advanced. I couldn’t even imagine the amount of time and precision it would take in order to set the text for an entire book at 8 to 10 point font.

It truly is an art form that I have gained a new appreciation for.
